The series was hand carved and hand printed using a traditional manual wood block printing press which was custom made in New Zealand. All colours were mixed by hand and the laboured process is entirely analogue and hand made.

 

This collection was the first wood block suite I produced as soon as I left university. The series was intended as a nod to the work of New Zealand artist Gordon Walters and the forms which are intended to bring together aspects of Maori and European visual languages and iconography within the framework of geometric abstraction into a re-imagined hybrid and new language.

 

This represents a visual identity which is neither and both at the same time – inhabiting an ambiguous space which takes from two different visual systems and meshes them together.
